This article explains the benefits of using WhatsApp Notifications a channel for notifying recipients, customers or partners about status updates.

Benefit

Introducing WhatsApp as notification channel could lift up the communication quality towards your recipients, customers or partners.

When does it make sense to use this feature?

• If notifications towards your recipients, customers or partners have a big impact on your business, i.e. communicating the ETA with recipients increases the delivery success rate and therefore decreases the average cost per delivery.

• If you already send out notifications i.e. via Email and want to increase the channels to also reach recipients that only provided a phone number.

• If you search for a cheaper channel to send out messages to phone numbers compared to SMS.

Prerequisites

• Active subscription with MotionTools to use this feature

• A business account at Meta (Facebook)

Setup

• You need to have a Facebook Business Account ⇒ See How to create a Facebook business portfolio

• Create an account at Meta for Developers and link it to your portfolio

• Go to my apps > Create a new app > Other > Business > name it i.e. “business_name Notifications” and connect it to your business, then hit “Create app”

  

• Open the App, if you don’t find it go to My Apps

• Go to WhatsApp API Setup and connect WhatsApp with your business

  

• You’ll get a test number and temporary access token. For more info you can follow this guide

  

• Add a real phone number as sender phone.

  

• Add a payment method

• Optional: You can add 1-5 test phone numbers that have WhatsApp so that you can test the service using one of the test numbers. These test messages send to these numbers don’t create any cost.

• If you need to adjust phone numbers in the future you can find this under Configuration / Manage phone numbers.

  

• In this view select the correct Application on the top right. When you have added and verified a phone number already, it will appear here.

  

• Otherwise hit "Add phone number".

• The number is now added but needs to get verified. Click the Gear icon on the right.

  

• Go to Profil and select "Send verification code"

• Enter the verification code.

• Go back to the WhatsApp App / WhatsApp > API Setup

• For Step 1: Select phone numbers, select the latest phone number you created.

• Now hit Generate access token

  

• If you now go back to the list of phone numbers, the new phone number should appear in Status "Connected".

Granular Business Integration System User Access Tokens

• On your Facebook Business Profile go to Business Settings > Users

• Go to System users

  

• Click on + Add

• Create a system user name with the role Employee and hit Create system user

  

• Now select the 3 dots / Assign assets

• Go to Apps, Select your app and select Full control / Manage app

• Go to WhatsApp accounts, select your WhatsApp Apps and select Full control / Manage WhatsApp business accounts

• Then Assign assets to save

  

• Select Generate token

• Select your app

• Set expiration to Never

• For permissions select

  • WhatsApp business manage event

  • WhatsApp business management

  • WhatsApp business messaging

• Create the permanent token

• Copy and save this token in a secured way.

• Go to WhatsApp accounts > select WhatsApp and copy the ID.

• Share token and ID with our Customer Success Team in a protected way i.e. via Doppler.
